The Dangers Of Theft In A Brokered Move

When moving brokers arrange moves with a low moving cost, they subsequently squeeze the subcontracted movers who will be getting less money than they need to make the move. The result is a build up of financial desperation among the movers which may cause them to resort to dishonest tricks and even theft to get the level of compensation they believe they deserve. These moves begin with a broker offering an unrealistically low moving cost estimate. Subsequently, after the company lands the deal, they take out their commission, and try and find a company to make the move for the small pittance of a fee that remains. This is the scenario, which breeds the desperation. Normal greed and cunning takes over from here.
Take a minute to think realistically about what can happen to your valuable belongings, in the course of being transported by a brokered deal. The pick-up will be prompt, because the broker doesn’t want to risk losing the deal at the last minute. Then, since, most likely, the broker hasn’t yet selected a company to contract for the move to, your goods will go into storage. So already, if you think about it, your priceless goods will be going through the hands of three crews, two movers and the storage facility. If something should turn up missing, when your belongings finally arrive at the destination, how will the police track down the thief? If your goods are split up, or transported in stages involving even more trucks and more storage facilities, then the track down job is impossible. The setup is too tempting for many petty thieves who wish to supplement their meager wages.
You can see for yourself, how this phenomena works in real life by reading the following story, found on the forum of a prominent anti-moving scam web site.
M., (the mover contracted by the broker). claims there’s been a robbery in their warehouse. I’m missing my 46″ Flatscreen LCD TV, my suitcases are half empty – expensive Winter Coats stolen, furniture damaged/ chipped, crystal stolen……
Seems like they went through my stuff and took out all the expensive items (coats stolen were only branded ones) ….. The company faxed me the police report stating there was a burglary at their warehouse, but the report did say; the back door was ajar but no sign of footsteps or disturbance in the backyard, moreover, they had enough time to go through boxes and pick out expensive items ……. This is very “suspicious” act of robbery (This company gave a good rate compared to other moving companies, which inclines me to believe the burglary may not be real … its $3000 for the tv alone) …”
Au underpaid company, “this company gave me a good rate compared to other moving companies”. and ample time to pick out valuable items worth taking, were probably the ingredients of theft in this story, that has become all too common in brokered moves.
One smart way to protect your goods in transit is to use a container shipping company that will allow your goods to be transported under lock and key, which only you control. To completely safety of your goods, you can hire a packing company to carefully Pack and load all your goods into the containers, and unload them for you, as well, at the other end. Packing Service Inc. is one honest packing company dedicated to protecting consumers form moving scams.
